Glossary of Terms:

Art Therapy: Art Therapy proposes a creative, imaginative and visually oriented experience, and comprises non-verbal and symbolic self-expression. During an art therapy session, clients often verbally explore the symbolism and meaning of their imagery with the art therapist.

Marital and Family Therapy: Marriage and family therapy utilizes family systems theory and clinical intervention to promote health and well-being. Marriage and family therapists (MFT’s) provide therapy to individuals, couples and families to help them resolve emotional, marital and family difficulties.

In family therapy, members attend the sessions as a group and work on understanding their differences from each other's perspectives. The goal is usually improved communication, less conflict, and greater empathy and cooperation.

Marital therapy is most effective when the partners are still on relatively good terms, therefore couples who receive marital counselling early on, improve their chances of success.

Play Therapy: Play therapy is based on the assumption that problems stemming from unconscious conflicts and developmental deficits in children are often revealed in their play. Through talking and playing with the therapist and the active involvement of the parents, children are helped to understand what is troubling them.  Play therapy provides parents with practical strategies for managing problematic behaviours at home.

Psychotherapy: A psychotherapist interacts with clients to initiate change in his or her thoughts, feelings, and behaviour through adaptation. A licensed psychotherapist obtains a master’s degree or doctorate in a chosen mental health field, undergoes a supervised clinical practicum, and is licensed, certified, or registered by a government or psychological agency to which they are accountable. Licensed professionals who practice psychotherapy include the following:

  • Psychiatrists

  • Registered psychiatric nurses

  • Clinical social workers

  • Marriage therapists

  • Family therapists

  • Clinical psychologists.
